A Life Transformed: Remembering the Faith Journey of Peter Spreckley

Following the recent news that Peter Spreckley has been promoted to glory. We honour the life of Peter, we also celebrate him by sharing his remarkable testimony. His encounter with God utterly transformed his direction, purpose, and influence. Peter’s story has encouraged countless believers across the UK and beyond, and it continues to inspire us today.

A Privileged Start, but a Spiritual Question

Peter often described his upbringing as “very privileged.” With a good home, excellent schooling, Cambridge University, a legal career, and a happy marriage to Mary, his life appeared full and successful.

Churchgoing was familiar to him, as he went twice a day at prep school, once a day at public school. Later he was an active part of parish life. He even served as churchwarden.

Yet, after nearly 30 years of attending and helping in churches, he had never actually met the living God. That realisation dawned unexpectedly while he was mowing the churchyard. In that quiet moment, a question entered his heart:

“I wonder if God is real?”

This question marked the beginning of a profound search.

Discovering the God He Had Missed

Unsure where to turn for answers, Peter went to the public library. He began reading testimonies of people who had encountered Jesus personally. Their accounts of miracles and transformation stirred him deeply. Opening the Bible—properly, for the first time, he discovered truths he had somehow missed. Even though he had decades of church involvement.

He realised he needed to be born again, and sitting room floor he committed his life to Christ. God met him powerfully in that moment.

Filled With the Holy Spirit

Shortly afterwards, Peter attended an FGB dinner. At his first ever meeting, there was a prophetic word was spoken over him and God was calling him to ministry.

Soon after, while replaying the tape of that evening at home with Mary. The power of God fell on him in an overwhelming way. He described it as being “like an electric shock without the shock.” Lasting nearly 45 minutes. Then he staggered around the room under the weight of God’s presence. It was an unmistakable baptism in the Holy Spirit.

This encounter changed everything for Peter:
• His values
• His priorities
• The way he saw his work, family, and calling
• The boldness of his faith
• The supernatural fruit that followed

A Ministry that Grew Beyond Expectations

Peter became unashamed of sharing the Gospel and God backed his words with power. Clients who visited him in his solicitor’s office were prayed for, healed, or even born again. Some experienced the presence of Jesus in ways they had never imagined.

He believed this was simply how a Christian should live. Jesus ministering through us wherever we are.

Peter went on to become a licensed lay reader in the Church of England (1997). He also ministered widely through the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, which he joined in 1984.

He later served as National Chairman of FGB for 17 years. Offering steady leadership, deep spiritual conviction, and a genuine pastoral heart for members across the UK and Ireland.

His ministry extended internationally as he travelled across Africa—East Africa and South Africa. Where he taught pastors, prayed for the sick, and witnessed God move powerfully.

“A Case of Daylight Robbery” — Peter’s Book

In 2022, Peter felt prompted by God to write a book reflecting on all he had learned since his conversion with God. He realised how much he had missed in his earlier years in church. Simply because key biblical truths had never been taught.

The result was his book –A Case of Daylight Robbery: What My Church Did Not Teach Me. Published April 2022 and available on Amazon.

In it, Peter explains how misunderstanding or neglecting critical passages of Scripture deprives believers. They miss the full inheritance Christ has given us, a message he was passionate to share.

A Legacy of Faith and Transformation

Peter’s life stands as a testimony to the power of an honest question, an open heart, and a God who reveals Himself to those who seek Him. From a respectable churchgoing solicitor to a Spirit empowered evangelist, teacher and leader. Peter demonstrated what God can do with a person fully yielded to Him. He often said:

“There is nothing more important than knowing God, serving Him obediently, and seeing Him move in other people’s lives.”

Peter lived this truth faithfully, and his impact continues through the lives he touched, the ministry he carried, and the legacy he leaves within FGB.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mary and the family at this difficult time.
