Brendan Conboy – A Life started with Trauma turned to Transformation

Based in Stroud

Life Before God

I grew up in fear.

My dad struggled with alcoholism, and home life was unpredictable. Anger, shouting, broken glass — those were normal sounds of childhood. I learned early that if I fought back, I felt powerful. So I fought!

At school. On the streets. Anywhere I could.

Fear turned into anger. Anger turned into bullying. And bullying became identity.

I searched for control in all the wrong places fighting, alcohol, football violence, even the occult. I experimented with séances, spells, darkness because I thought power would fix the pain. At fourteen, after rejection from a girl I thought I loved, I decided to end my life. I walked toward a train line on a wet October night.

But a red phone box glowing in the dark stopped me. A sign said: Suicide? Lonely? Despair? Call the Samaritans. I called. A stranger listened.

That phone call saved my life.

Looking back, I now see what I couldn’t see then — God’s golden thread running through everything.

The Changing Moment

The real shift began when we moved house. We moved next door to Christian neighbours.

Not religious. Not pushy. Just real. They lived differently. Peacefully. Joyfully. Consistently.

And I watched. Around that time, I had a strange and powerful moment. I remember what I now describe as “interviewing an angel for a job.” It sounds unusual, but in my mind I was wrestling with something spiritual.

I was asking, If God is real, what does He want from me? And do I want it?

I had chased power in darkness. Now light was confronting me. The day I invited Jesus into my life, it was like a switch was thrown.

I didn’t become perfect, but I became purposeful. The rage that had driven me was no longer in charge. The searching stopped. The Golden Thread became visible.

I realised God hadn’t just rescued me, He had called me.

Life After God

Life after inviting Jesus in didn’t become easy. But it became directed.

God took the very thing that had always been inside me — words — and awakened it. I discovered a God-given gift: rhyming. Not just rhyming for fun. Rhyming with message. Rhyming with mission.

For 25 years, I became a Christian rap artist.

The same intensity that once fuelled fighting now fuelled faith. The same voice that once shouted in anger now declared hope. The same passion that once intimidated now inspired.

Music had shaped me as a child.
Now God used music as my mission field.

Today, I’ve evolved into a spoken word artist, still sharing truth, still telling story, still pointing people to the One who saved me.

My life is not about how strong I was. It’s about how patient God has been.

It’s about becoming beloved.
